Installation
All the cameras and associated equipment arrive pre-programmed so that when connected together will link directly through to your Crocodile Watch account.

You are strongly advised to unpack all the equipment on a table and plug it all together to ensure that it works (including with your own PC or router, if any) before making any permanent camera fixings.

Internal cameras
Internal cameras can be either wired or wireless. All require connecting into mains power with the supplied mains adapter. For wireless cameras no further wiring is necessary (unless the signal proves to be too weak, in which case they must be treated as a wired camera). Commonly these cameras are stood on bookshelves or the like and no real 'installation' work is required at all.

The internal cameras we supply weigh only half a pound and do not need heavy or awkward brackets to support them. They come with a stand which can also be fixed to a vertical, horizontal or inclined surface.

The wireless range of the cameras varies depending on the thickness of the walls: in general, signals travel much better up and down through the floors of buildings than they do through walls on the same floor level. As a guide, distances of fifty feet in a modern house are not normally a problem.

Wired cameras require an ethernet cable (supplied) to provide communication to the camera and back to the router. Careful positioning of the router and camera can reduce the amount of cable required.

External cameras
If the cameras are to be used externally, then they will need to be inside housings, which are significantly heavier to withstand the weather. The power and communications cables will need to run from inside to outside: this needs limited DIY skills but will take time. Any competent handyman can do this. We would normally suggest powering external cameras through the same cable as the communications signal uses: this is referred to as 'Power over Ethernet'. It is more expensive but reduces the work in cabling, particularly if the camera is a long way from a power source. Power over Ethernet can be used over distances of hundreds of feet.

At worst this means a need to drill one hole in the wall to provide two wires to an external camera.

We do not currently provide an installation service, but any competent satellite engineer or electrician should be able to fix a camera to a wall and run a cable to it. The cameras are all low voltage and do not need a qualified electrician to install them in normal use.

Routers
We supply a pre-programmed router which will work immediately with the cameras to allow the internet server to produce the images on the website.

If you already have a router then it will be configured to work with your existing hardware and software. To make this router work with the cameras you will have to input certain settings into it (primarily for settings known as 'port forwarding') in order to view the cameras remotely.
